Our Workforce

Why work for St Vincent's Mental Health?

Are you looking for your next challenge with a values driven service that cares about their people?

Are you inspired to contribute to a changing clinical landscape?

We believe that people have the capacity to recover, reclaim and transform their lives and strive to support individuals on their recovery journey.

We want to help you grow into competent and capable clinicians to support all those we work with.

Mental Health Nursing

Our nurses are an integral part of frontline delivery of services and care provision. Mental Health nurses work to ensure a positive consumer, family, carer and supporter experience. With a focus on consumer strengths, we are committed to supporting the recovery journey with a person centred, trauma-informed, holistic approach in collaboration with our colleagues from various disciplines and teams across the service.

Mental Health Nurses provide specialised care and support for people who are experiencing mental health and alcohol and other drug challenges. This may include Schizophrenia, Psychoses, Bipolar Disorder, Personality Disorders, Depression and Anxiety. Care can range from acute and emergency inpatient interventions through to ongoing support, recovery and rehabilitation in community settings.

Models and nursing theory we use at SVHM:

  • The Strengths model
  • Recovery oriented practice
  • Trauma informed care
  • Safewards

Allied Health

Social Work

We work in partnership with consumers, families, carers, medical, nursing and allied health teams regarding a range of issues that may arise during a hospital admission. Social work provides a service that considers a person's medical conditions, changed health needs and the psychosocial impacts of their admission.

Occupational Therapy

Occupational Therapists (OTs) are experts in understanding the impact of health conditions and disability on everyday living. We view occupations as essential for health and wellbeing - occupations include the things a person wants to do, needs to do and is expected to do. We understand that becoming unwell impacts daily life, and it is this impact on daily life that we work towards changing.

Occupational therapists work in all areas of Mental Health at St Vincent’s. We work in collaboration with our clinician and lived experience colleagues to provide recovery-focused clinical care. Our practice is informed by models of occupation including KAWA, MoHO and CanMOP. We believe occupational participation is a human right and work towards occupational justice with consumers. We work within the Strengths Model of Recovery and our practice is trauma-informed and recovery orientated.

Lived Experience Workforce

The lived experience workforce consists of trained professionals who draw on their experiences of mental ill health, or caring for someone experiencing mental illness, to provide direct support as well as engage in systemic advocacy to improve our services.

LLEW Learning Collaborative with Yale University

The Department of Health’s Lived Experience Branch has announced 11 organisations selected for the first Victorian cohort of The Learning Collaborative (TLC), a landmark initiative led by Self Help Addiction Resource Centre and Yale University to strengthen Lived and Living Experience Workforces (LLEWs). This program aims to enhance mental health and AOD services by integrating LLEWs and improving outcomes for consumers and carers.
