ACME - Advanced and Complex Medical Emergencies

This course aims to challenge you in the management of complex medical emergencies through a mix of practical workshops, group discussion and immersive simulation. Beyond the clinical skills required to manage complex emergencies, ACME aims to develop you understanding of factors that impact individual and team performance.
Come and learn from an experienced and supportive faculty, in a modern simulation centre at St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne, located on the fringe of the CBD.

This courses aims to challenge you in the management of complex medical emergencies through a mix of practical workshops, group discussion and immersive simulation. Beyond the clinical skills required to manage complex emergencies, ACME aims to develop your understanding of factors that impact individual and team performance.
Our experienced faculty provide a safe and supportive environment for you to learn and challenge yourself. With a high faculty to participant ratio you can expect individualised support and feedback.

The course is a fully accredited ACEM CPD activity. Trainees should be in the last two years of training and must supply a letter of support from their DEMT prior to applying.

 ARC ALS2

Advanced Life Support 2 - Australian Resuscitation Council accredited program.

This is a two-day course with the focus on the developing advanced skills in managing deteriorating patient and cardiac arrest. The course is designed for healthcare professionals with who would be expected to apply those skills taught as part of their clinical duties, or to teach them on a regular basis. Appropriate participants include doctors, and nurses working in critical care areas (e.g. ED, CCU, ICU, HDU, acute admissions units) or in the resuscitation /medical emergency team, and paramedics.

Developing Debriefing for Learner Centred Outcomes

The Simulation Debriefing Course has been designed to assist healthcare educators to develop and/or build their simulation debriefing skills.  The interactive two-day program includes facilitated discussions, workshops and practical debriefing sessions.  Participants will have the opportunity to discuss topics and practice skills such as:

  • Setting up for a successful debrief
  • Debriefing models and techniques
    - Pendleton’s Model
    - Plus / Delta
    - Advocacy / Inquiry
  • Introduction to crisis resource management principles for debriefing
  • Debriefing when things go well
  • The difficult debrief
  • Debriefing in the clinical environment

STAR-CODe

This course is for SVHM staff only.

STAR-CODe - Deteriorating Patient Course
STAR-CODe - Simulation Training for Acute Response and Care of Deteriorating Patients

This dynamic interprofessional course is designed to support and empower nursing and junior medical staff in recognising and responding to acutely deteriorating patients. Participants will gain essential technical and professional skills, fostering a systematic and collaborative approach to patient management.

Through the use of facilitated discussion, skills stations and immersive simulations, participants will have the opportunity to apply these critical skills with support and feedback from an experienced faculty in a community of shared expertise.

TIPS - Training in Professional Skills

This course offered by the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons teaches patient-centred communication and team-oriented non-technical skills in a clinical context. Through simulation, participants address issues and events that occur in the clinical and operating theatre environment that require skills in communication, teamwork, decision making and conflict management. The TIPS course is evidence-based and designed to support emerging surgeons to communicate effectively and contribute to quality surgical care and patient outcomes.

Trauma Informed Care

This course is for SVHM staff only.

Between 57–75% of people will experience a traumatic event at some point. The chance of hospital staff encountering someone with a trauma history is very high. Staff want to understand more about the impact of trauma in the hospital setting so they can support their patients.

The training is delivered face-to-face and includes an educational workshop followed by three immersive patient simulations using professional actors.

VINSIM

Physiotherapy skills in the management of the critical care patient. The course is ideal for recent graduates or those with limited ICU experience and will cover management of the haemodynamically unstable patient, general assessment of the ICU patient, early rehabilitation and cardiorespiratory management of the long-stay ICU patient.
