Interns

Interns at St Vincent's Hospital Melbourne have a broad range of clinical and educational opportunities, to meet core training requirements and provide exposure to a number of specialist and subspecialty areas in medicine, surgery and critical care.

St Vincent’s Hospital is proud of our partnerships with intern rotation hospitals in Hamilton, Warrnambool, Swan Hill, Werribee Mercy and at the Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne.  Rotations at these hospitals provide interns experiences and exposure in addition to those available at the St Vincent’s Hospital Melbourne Fitzroy campus.

St Vincent's Hospital Melbourne provides comprehensive education programs for medical staff, including interns, residents, registrars and beyond.  The Clinical Education and Simulation Centre team work closely with junior medical staff to develop new and innovative education and training programs.  Some of the education opportunities for interns are listed below:

Weekly Pager Protected Teaching

Weekly JMO education sessions include practical skills workshops and presentations tailored to the needs of doctors in their first year of medicine.  All departments within the hospital are advised to protect this time and to ensure interns are supported to attend.

Regular hands-on workshops are provided in suturing, plastering, deteriorating patient simulation, X-ray interpretation and communication skills including breaking bad news.  St Vincent's Hospital is committed to innovative education, and our program is updated regularly and responsive to the feedback and education needs of interns.

Orientation

Interns are provided with a three day orientation on commencement to ensure they are ready to 'hit the ground running'.  The program includes a comprehensive introduction to St Vincent's Hospital, clinical systems and processes; as well as a number of hands-on, interactive sessions.  A 'shadow day' provides interns with the opportunity to work as a buddy with a more experienced intern prior to starting in their new role.

Online learning

Interactive web-based learning modules provide JMS with the opportunity to complete continuing education programs and mandatory hospital requirements whether on or off-site.  We are continuing to build our capacity in this area and work with innovative solutions to provide education opportunities to JMS frequently 'on the go'.

Unit-Based Learning

Term Descriptions are provided for all Intern and Resident rotations, outlining the learning objectives, key contacts, rostering and other important information. Our network of Term Supervisors provide JMS with formal feedback each rotation, and interns will have opportunities to attend and present in unit meetings and education sessions.

Download the JMS Handbook

The handbook is updated by hospital staff each year to provide a one stop shop of useful hospital information, guidelines, procedures and clinical notes.

Clinical Education and Simulation Centre

St Vincent's Hospital Clinical Education and Simulation Centre provides learning opportunities across all specialties, utilising a range of educational technology and a purpose built teaching laboratory. Facilities include high fidelity manikins and a cadaveric anatomy laboratory in association with Melbourne University. The centre provides medical staff with the opportunity to practice and develop clinical skills in a safe environment.
