Podiatry

Podiatrists play an important role in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of foot and lower limb conditions. In the hospital setting, podiatrists work with a team of professionals to manage foot problems such as wounds / ulcers, infections or destructive joint disorders that place individuals at risk of amputation. Podiatrists are also involved in falls prevention and the treatment of muscle / tendon pathologies. Broadly, the aim of podiatry services is to preserve / improve mobility and thereby enhance patient wellbeing.

Research

The predictors of foot ulceration in people with scleroderma

Summary: Existing prevalence data suggests that 26-31% of people with scleroderma experience foot ulceration yet little is known about foot ulcers in this population group. The aim of this study is to identify predictors of foot ulceration in scleroderma and facilitate the development of appropriate screening tools.

The effectiveness of podiatry interventions for reducing foot ulceration and amputation in adults on dialysis: a pilot randomised controlled trial

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of podiatry interventions for reducing foot ulceration and amputation in adults of dialysis
Design: Parallel-group pilot randomised controlled trial
Setting: Satellite dialysis units of St Vincent's Hospital Melbourne
Participants: 29 participants with end stage renal failure on dialysis
Interventions: The experimental group received podiatry care including regular foot screening, foot care and footwear education.
