Medical Students at St Vincent's Hospital Clinical School (The University of Melbourne)

The St Vincent's Clinical School was established in 1910 and coordinates teaching of medical students at The University of Melbourne. The Clinical School has a reputation for outstanding teaching, consistently producing exceptional academic results and with many students continuing as doctors at St Vincent’s Hospital. The last two Clinical Deans have been Prof Greg Whelan and Prof Wilma Beswick with the current Director of Medical Student Education being A/Prof Justin Tse.

The Clinical School is supported by excellent educational facilities and further enhanced with renovations in 2013 and will move to the Aikenhead Discovery of Medical Discovery when completed.

In 2012, the Clinical School commenced teaching in the new MD degree medical course. This is a four-year graduate course where students will complete clinical placement days in year 1 and full time clinical / research placements in their last three years based at St Vincent’s Hospital. We also use additional teaching sites which include St Georges Hospital, Peter MacCallum Hospital, Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital and St Vincent’s Private Hospital so ensuring our students receive a breadth of clinical experience.

Clinical Electives - Medical Students only

St Vincent’s Clinical School offers limited elective medical student placements in their FINAL YEAR of medical training. These are four or six-week electives and are coordinated by St Vincent’s Clinical School. Electives under four weeks are not offered.

All prospective elective medical students must complete an application process with the Clinical School and no elective can commence until approved by the Director of Medical Student Education and the electives officer. Additionally, a letter of support from your home university stating that you are in a final year medical student program is required along with confirmation of vaccinations required for medical electives. Applications outside of this formal process cannot be undertaken. Research electives are not permitted as part of this program. There is an application fee and administration fee for students to be able to complete an elective at St Vincent’s Hospital.
