Aboriginal Health Unit You are here:HomeAbout UsOur CommunityAboriginal Health Unit Aboriginal Health at St Vincent’s sits within the Mission Directorate, which has focus on supporting greater access for patients who experience disadvantage. In order to provide greater access and continually improve its services to the Aboriginal community, St Vincent’s established a dedicated Aboriginal Health Unit at the end of 2015. The key factor in St Vincent’s approach to ensuring good Aboriginal health outcomes is the Aboriginal Hospital Liaison Officer Program, which was first established at St Vincent’s in 1982 through funding from the Koori Health Unit in the Department of Human Services, now known as the Department of Health & Human Services (DHHS). Since the mid-1990s, the program has had a full-time Aboriginal Hospital Liaison Officer based at St Vincent’s to improve access for Aboriginal people, and currently employs three people in this area. The primary mechanism by which St Vincent’s drives improvement in health services for the Aboriginal Community is through working in partnership with Aboriginal community organisations. Both the St Vincent’s Aboriginal Health Advisory Committee and St Vincent’s overriding commitment to improvement in Aboriginal health has resulted in the prioritisation of a number of Aboriginal health projects over many years, which have contributed significantly to closing the health care gap.
