Blended Mental Health and Emergency Graduate Nurse Program

St Vincent’s Mental Health Service has a unique and highly specialised Graduate Nurse Program to address the needs of new nurses in Mental Health and Emergency.

The program includes 2 rotations, with clinical placements provided in the acute adult in-patient service (AIS), community mental health services, aged mental health and emergency. The program commences in January each year and graduates will have an opportunity to rotate through Mental Health services and the Emergency department.

Care of the Older Person Graduate Nurse Program

 

St Vincent’s Hospital Fitzroy and St George’s Hospital Kew offer a specialised Graduate Nurse Program that focuses specifically on the care of the older person.

The program includes two 6-month rotations in the Geriatric Evaluation and Management (GEM) unit at either Fitzroy or Kew, and Ellerslie Unit, Kew.

Enrolled Nurse Transition to Practice Program 

Applications for the July and November 2024 programs open Tuesday April 2, 2024 and close Monday April 22, 2024.

The Program is offered part time at 0.8EFT (equivalent to 4 days per week) with three allocated rotations over 12 months.

The program offers three 4-month rotations with candidates supported by the Graduate Nurse Program Coordinators and the Practice Development Nurses (PDNs). The Enrolled Nurse Graduate will begin their rotation in Residential Care then will transition to Sub-acute Care and will finish in an acute Medical or Surgical rotation. 

In the first week a comprehensive orientation program is provided before commencement in the allocated clinical area. Throughout the graduate year study days are held which include practical clinical skill sessions, presentations and simulation scenarios.

Ongoing support from ward preceptors will be available in addition to graduate support from Education & Learning.

First Nations Graduate Nurse Program

St Vincent’s offers a dedicated First Nations Graduate Nurse Program, to facilitate the transition into nursing for First Nation and Torres Strait Islander Graduate Nurses.

Graduates are offered two 6-month rotations supported by the Graduate Nurse Program Coordinators and the Practice Development Nurses (PDNs).

The hospital has cultural mentors to further support our First Nations and Torres Strait Islander Graduate Nurses.

Mental Health Graduate Nurse Program

St Vincent’s Mental Health Service has a unique and highly specialised Graduate Nurse Program to address the needs of new nurses in Mental Health.

The program includes 2 rotations, with clinical placements provided in the acute adult in-patient service (AIS), community mental health services and aged mental health. The program commences in January each year and graduates will complete a portion of their Post-Graduate Diploma in Mental Health Nursing.

Mainstream Registered Nurse Graduate Program

Applications for 2025 RN Graduate Program open Monday May 27, 2024 and close Friday June 21, 2024.

The Program is offered part time at 0.8EFT over 12 months.

There will be 3 intakes in 2025, commencing January 20, February 24 and May 12.  

There will be 100+ positions available in the 2024 GNP.

The program offers two 6-month rotations with candidates supported by the Graduate Nurse Program Coordinators and the Practice Development Nurses (PDNs).

Allocation to an intake is based on applicants' clinical rotation preferences and their completion date of university studies.
In the first week a comprehensive orientation program is provided before commencement in the allocated clinical area. Throughout the graduate year 4 study days are held which include practical clinical skill sessions, presentations and simulation scenarios.

Ongoing support from ward preceptors will be available in addition to graduate support from Education & Learning.

Following successful completion of the Registered Nurse Graduate Program a wide range of career opportunities are on offer including full time or part time ward positions and the Grade 2 Pathway to Specialty (PSP) Program. There are also opportunities for casual employment via our Nurse Workforce Unit.

Perioperative Graduate Nurse Program

The Perioperative Graduate Nurse Program is a 12-month program with one intake annually. Each year the intake commences in January. All offered positions will be part time at 0.8EFT. 

The program includes rotations in selected specialty areas, that include anaesthetics, post anaesthesia care unit and instrument and circulating. Allocation to specialty areas is based on applicants' clinical rotation preferences and available positions within that area. 

Orientation is provided on commencement to prepare graduates with essential skills to perform the role. Following orientation, graduates will have allocated supernumerary time. Ongoing support is provided by the Graduate Nurse Program Coordinators, Practice Development Nurses (PDNs), Nurse Unit Managers and Associate Nurse Unit Managers.  

Following successful completion of the Perioperative Graduate Nurse Program, a range of career opportunities may be offered including full time or part time positions, subject to EFT availability, the Grade 2 Pathway to

Specialty Practice Program and casual employment through the Nurse Workforce Unit.
