Goals

The goal of the program is to provide specialised training in psychiatry for mental health professionals that will enhance local clinical expertise in mental health care in the region.

 

The program provides hands-on experience and training in patient care, psychiatric treatments and special skills in the nominated areas of expertise including research. Through an intensive form of continuing education and up-skilling, mental health clinicians can apply the newly acquired skills and knowledge directly to local clinical practice in their own countries.

 

Aims

  • To develop advanced knowledge and skills in clinical psychiatry through participation in a comprehensive training program at various clinical sites
  • To provide training for overseas mental health clinicians in a wide range of psychiatric specialties, especially where training in some specialties is otherwise not available in their home countries.
  • To enhance local expertise in mental health care in Asian countries and promote best clinical practice within local contexts
  • To increase the capacity of Asia-Pacific mental health clinicians and institutions to improve mental health care through training and education.
  • To foster regional collaboration through building a network of mental health clinicians, psychiatrists, academics, researchers and institutions who are committed to continuing education and training.

Components

Trainees will have access to an academic and clinical training program clearly set out during the proposed training period. Experienced clinicians and academics are allocated to provide supervision and professional support for the trainees in their clinical or research work.

 

The program can include the following components:

  • Clinical placement in the relevant subspecialty area
  • Clinical training under supervision
  • Tutorial program
  • Departmental seminars/guest lectures
  • Management/staff support meetings
  • Research meetings/programs
  • Training modules
  • Visits to a range of community rehabilitation and support services
  • Individual supervision with consultant
  • Journal club
  • Case conferences/presentations
  • Academic meetings
  • Visits to other university-affiliated services

Although the training primarily has a clinical focus, other aspects of training including research, academic and administrative can also be provided.

Trainees are also encouraged to plan a research project or quality improvement project in an area of their clinical work, education or training that would enhance the practice of psychiatry in their local institutions.
